We are a not-for-profit, volunteer group that recycles bicycles. We take used bikes and bike parts of all kinds, make them rideable, and then give them to people who need them. We accept donations of bikes and parts of any age and condition as well as monetary contributions to cover our costs of materials such as tubes, tires, handlebar grips, and seats in addition to recycling (yes, we have to pay to recycle bicycle tires). In addition to bicycles, recipients receive a bicycle helmet.
We are committed to reducing our waste stream and attempt to recycle parts of bicycles that can no longer be safely used. We give bicycles and bike safety and repair demonstrations to public schools and adult groups such as the Endorphin Power Company (for drug rehabilitation programs), and St. Martin's Hospitality Center (for the homeless). We partner with Albuquerque Alliance for Active Living, who are also financial supporters.
Last year we gave out 248 bicycles, mostly to elementary schools. For more information on the history of the program, see the following article from the Journal (October 26, 2004): Bike Giveaway Brings Smiles to Children. We also had an article in the first issue (May 2006) of New Mexico Bicyclist newspaper and we will have an article in the upcoming La Montanita Co-op newsletter.
If you have any useable bikes or bike parts, or for more information, contact:
George Montoya, director, (505) 550-5604 (cell)
To recycle unuseable bike parts, see our recycling page.
